How would you feel if your mother published an erotic novel? Or a memoir detailing her sexual exploits with various men?

This is a reality that Anderson Cooper is currently facing, and he says he supports his mother’s literary career, regardless of where it takes her.

Several months ago, my mother invited me to see Sex and the City with her at the theater, and when I arrived to purchase my ticket, I discovered her husband was with her as well. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen this movie, but watching naked actors simulate sex with your mother right next to you and your stepfather two seats down is not an experience most would care to repeat.

Lately, the fiction and non-fiction published by celebrities, in particular, continues to stretch the boundaries from contemporary fiction to what the New York Times calls “pure, unadulterated smut”. Maybe this isn’t a new thing at all, but I’ve definitely started to notice it more.

I’m all for freedom of speech and I find censorship unconstitutional. Obviously, anyone who writes erotica of any kind is someone’s wife, husband, mother, father, daughter, son, whatever. And since I don’t read or write erotica, my opinion on the subject is far less informed than someone who does.

Nevertheless, I thank my lucky stars that I have a prodigiously conservative mother who whispers the word sex if she has to mention it at all and says down there rather than naming a particular reproductive organ.

Oh wow, I never knew who his mother was before. Well, that explains a lot of questions I had before about why she’d write such a book. My mom was a lot like yours, but to a more extreme degree. “Conservative” is too conservative a word, my mother was a prude. I have suspicions, however, that had she grown up in a more liberal era, that may not have been the case. She was two years older than Gloria Vanderbilt, but had a very different upbringing. I doubt she would have even gone to see “Sex and the City”.

I’m not sure where the definition “erotica” ends and it becomes “pornography”, though.
